GENERAL COUNCIL VISIT TO THE AMATONGAS MISSION

November 23 to December 1, 2024

The Amatongas mission is under the direct responsibility of the Superior General, who is responsible for making ordinary, canonical and extraordinary visits. In this case, the visit was extraordinary and was carried out with Brother Carlos Almaraz, second councilor, to whom the direct accompaniment of the mission is delegated for the present mandate of six years.

The urgency of this meeting was motivated by the incorporation into the project of the Salesian Sisters (Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Francis de Sales), who will take charge of the girls' boarding school from the next academic year 2025. This incorporation requires the construction of a house to accommodate the religious community on the grounds of the girls' boarding school and other related work. The construction project will be presented to various founding organizations and supported by the Foundation Corazonistas.

In addition, the visitors worked with the brothers on the configuration and animation of the future community, the accompaniment of young Mozambican brothers and the need to generate a culture of self-sufficiency. This is leading to staff adjustments, cost containment and quota monitoring, so that the mission will not be dependent on outside help in the future, except for necessary improvement and expansion projects.

The incorporation into the mission of Brother Marc Viché, from the Delegation of Central Africa, the presence of three Mozambican brothers, the arrival of the Salesian sisters and the path of self-financing are reasons to trust for the future at Amatongas, despite the many difficulties we face. The challenges for the Institute in this mission are many, but the Lord sustains us with surprises that renew our hope.

Thank you to all our missionary brothers in Amatongas. We never stop knocking on the doors of confreres and provinces to send missionaries to Amatongas, a place on the periphery to which we are called by our charism and by Pope Francis.
